Dog Spay/Neuter: Post-Surgery Pet Hotel Care

Thinking about pet hotel care after spay/neuter? Here's what you need to know.

Post-Surgery Timeline

First 24 Hours

  • Recovery from anesthesia
  • Should ONLY be at vet clinic or home
  • NO pet hotel during this period

Days 2-7 (Early Recovery)

  • Restricted movement essential
  • E-collar (cone) must be worn
  • Incision site monitoring required
  • Pet hotel possible ONLY if:

- Hotel has direct vet access - Staff trained in post-op monitoring - Incision is clean and dry

Days 7-14 (Late Recovery)

  • Suture removal (day 10-14)
  • More normal activity returning
  • Pet hotel generally acceptable

What to Tell the Hotel

  1. Surgery date and procedure
  2. Suture removal appointment (arrange transportation)
  3. Activity restrictions in writing
  4. Emergency vet contact
  5. Pain medication schedule

Warning Signs to Monitor

  • Red, swollen or open incision
  • Discharge from incision
  • Dog licking excessively (E-collar effectiveness)
  • Lethargy beyond day 3
  • Fever or loss of appetite

Questions for Pet Hotels

  4. How do you monitor incision sites?
