Normal body temperature: 38-39°C Heat stress: 40°C Heat stroke: 41°C+
Warning Signs
Early Warning Signs
- Excessive panting
- Drooling more than usual
- Restlessness
Serious Warning Signs (Act Immediately)
- Bright red or pale gums
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Glazed eyes
- Stumbling or weakness
- Loss of consciousness
Emergency Response
If you suspect heat stroke:
- Move to shade or air conditioning IMMEDIATELY
- Apply cool (not cold) water to paws, neck, and armpits
- Offer small amounts of water (not ice cold)
- Fan the animal while wet
- Get to vet within 30 minutes
DO NOT: Use ice water, ice packs directly, or force water
Prevention Strategies
At Home
- Never leave in a parked car
- Always provide fresh water
- Kiddie pool for water-loving breeds
- Cooling mats and elevated beds
On Walks
- Walk before 7am or after 8pm
- Check pavement temperature (5 second rule)
- Carry water and a collapsible bowl
