Kennel Cough: Complete Guide for Pet Hotel Users

Kennel cough (Bordetella) is the most common illness associated with pet hotel stays.

What is Kennel Cough?

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterial infection causing:

  • Distinctive honking cough (goose-like)
  • Retching after coughing
  • Nasal discharge
  • Mild lethargy
  • Usually NOT fever (important distinction)

Is It Serious?

In healthy adult dogs:

  • Usually self-limiting (7-10 days)
  • Uncomfortable but rarely dangerous
  • Similar to human "common cold"

In vulnerable dogs:

  • Puppies under 6 months: More serious
  • Elderly dogs: Pneumonia risk
  • Immunocompromised: Veterinary attention needed

Incubation Period

  • 3-10 days after exposure
  • Dog appears healthy during this time
  • Can spread to other dogs before symptoms appear

Vaccination

Bordetella vaccine options:

  • Injectable: Given 1 week before boarding (minimum)
  • Intranasal: Effective in 3-4 days
  • Oral: Newer option, convenient

Ask your vet which is right for your dog

What to Tell the Pet Hotel

  1. Recent Bordetella vaccination date
  2. Any respiratory history
  3. Emergency contact if symptoms develop

Treatment

Most cases resolve without antibiotics:

  • Rest
  • Honey (soothing)
  • Humidifier
  • Vet visit if: symptoms worsen after day 7, fever develops, stops eating
