Dog Heatstroke: Critical Summer Prevention at Pet Hotels

Heatstroke kills dogs. Turkey's summers make this the most important safety topic.

What is Heatstroke?

Dogs cannot sweat (only through paw pads and panting):

  • Body temperature rises rapidly
  • Above 41C: Cell damage begins
  • Above 42C: Brain damage, death possible
  • Can progress in 15-20 minutes

High-Risk Breeds

Highest risk:

  • Brachycephalic (Bulldog, Pug, Frenchie)
  • Dark-coated breeds
  • Obese dogs
  • Very young and very old
  • Husky and Nordic breeds in Turkey summer

Lower risk:

  • Short-coated, lean breeds
  • Dogs acclimatized to heat

What Pet Hotels Must Do

  1. Air conditioning in ALL sleeping areas (verified, not just claimed)
  2. Fresh water always available (check every 2 hours)
  3. Walk schedule: Before 8am and after 8pm ONLY
  4. No outdoor time during 10am-6pm (shadow insufficient)
  5. Cooling mats available

Emergency Heatstroke Protocol

If dog shows signs (panting, weakness, collapse):

  1. Move to cool area immediately
  2. Cool water on paws and groin (not ice - too rapid cooling dangerous)
  3. Wet towel on body
  4. Fan if available
  5. Emergency vet immediately
  6. Do NOT give water to drink (aspiration risk)
