Dog Treats at Pet Hotels: Safe and Healthy Guide
Treats seem harmless but wrong treats can cause real problems.
Why Treat Management Matters
- Some dogs have allergies (beef, chicken, wheat)
- Caloric intake must be controlled
- Multiple staff members giving treats = overfeeding
- Some commercial treats contain harmful ingredients
What to Tell the Hotel
Be specific in writing:
- "Only treats I provide"
- "Maximum X treats per day"
- "No beef-based treats" (if allergy)
- "No rawhide bones" (if you restrict)
Safe Treat Options
Commercial
- Single-ingredient treats (chicken, fish, sweet potato)
- VOHC-approved dental chews
- Breed/size appropriate products
Natural/Homemade
- Carrot sticks (low calorie, great for teeth)
- Apple slices (no seeds - seeds contain cyanide)
- Blueberries (antioxidants, low calorie)
- Watermelon (no seeds, no rind)
- Plain rice cakes (tiny pieces)
NEVER Give to Dogs
- Grapes/raisins (kidney failure)
- Chocolate (toxic)
- Xylitol/artificial sweeteners (fatal)
- Onions/garlic (toxic)
- Macadamia nuts (toxic)
- Avocado (toxic)
- Cooked bones (splinter risk)
Calorie Counting
Treats should be maximum 10% of daily calories. A 10kg dog needs ~400 calories daily. That's 40 calories max in treats.
