Bulldog Pet Hotel Guide: Brachycephalic Breeds

English and French Bulldogs are beloved but have unique health needs due to their flat faces.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)

Both breeds can suffer from:

  • Narrowed nostrils
  • Elongated soft palate
  • Narrow trachea

This means:

  • Difficulty breathing (especially in heat/stress)
  • Cannot cool themselves by panting efficiently
  • Higher heat stroke risk
  • Cannot exercise intensively

Critical Hotel Requirements

Temperature Control

  • Maximum room temperature: 22C (not 25C like other breeds)
  • Cold fresh water always available
  • Cooling mats required
  • No outdoor time in sun between 10am-6pm

Exercise Restrictions

  • Short walks only (10-15 minutes max)
  • NO running, jumping, intense play
  • Swimming with supervision can help cooling

Sleep Positioning

  • Slightly elevated head helps breathing
  • Orthopedic beds recommended
  • Some need CPAP at night (rare but exists)

Observation

  • Staff must monitor breathing sounds
  • Noisy breathing can indicate distress
  • Immediate vet contact for: blue gums, open-mouth breathing at rest

Red Flags

  • Hotel without specific Bulldog experience
  • Hot, poorly ventilated facility
  • Group play with active dogs
  • Staff unaware of breathing signs
