Kangal & Shepherd Dogs Pet Hotel Guide

Kangals and other large shepherd breeds (Caucasian, Anatolian) have specialized needs.

Kangal Character

  • Turkey's national dog breed
  • Natural guardian instinct (very strong)
  • Independent thinker
  • Not naturally social with unknown dogs
  • Extremely strong (can reach 80kg)

Space Requirements

Kangals CANNOT be kept in standard kennels:

  • Minimum indoor space: 6m x 5m
  • Outdoor run: Minimum 300m2
  • Fence: 2.5m minimum (they can jump)
  • Reinforced structure (strength-tested)

Social Management

  • Should NOT share space with unknown dogs
  • Individual exercise only
  • Staff must be confident (never nervous)
  • May need muzzle for safety during care

Temperature Benefits

Unlike most breeds, Kangals handle Turkish summers well:

  • Thick coat acts as insulation (both ways)
  • DO NOT shave (coat protects from heat)
  • Still need shade and water access
  • Walk in cooler hours

Finding Suitable Hotels

Very few pet hotels in Turkey can properly accommodate Kangals:

  • Look for farm-style facilities
  • Rural settings preferred
  • Former shepherd dog experience essential

2026 Turkey Prices

Note: Kangals often require custom pricing:

  • Most hotels charge 1.5-2x standard rate
  • Estimated: 400-800 TRY/night (minimum)
  • Rural farm boarding: Often negotiated separately
