Dachshund Pet Hotel Guide

Dachshunds (Wiener Dogs) have unique physical needs that make hotel selection critical.

The IVDD Risk

Dachshunds have 10-12x higher risk of Intervertebral Disc Disease (back problems):

• Long spine, short legs = mechanical disadvantage
• Jumping and stairs are the biggest risks
• A single bad jump can cause paralysis

Non-Negotiable Hotel Requirements

Physical Safety

• RAMPS instead of stairs (mandatory)
• Low beds/sleeping areas (max 15cm height)
• Staff trained to carry Dachshunds properly (never by spine)
• No jumping activities
• No running with large dogs

Staff Knowledge

• Must know IVDD signs (sudden weakness, crying)
• Emergency vet protocol for spine issues
• Proper lifting technique (support entire body)

Signs to Walk Away

• Stairs anywhere in the facility
• High-sided kennels requiring jumping
• Staff unfamiliar with IVDD
• Large dog play groups they'd join

Exercise for Dachshunds

• Short, frequent walks (3-4x daily, 15-20 min each)
• Swimming excellent (no spine compression)
• NO fetch, jumping, or rough play
• Mental games excellent substitute for physical
