Why Puppies Cry

They have just left their mother and siblings. The crying is genuine distress, not manipulation.

Sleeping Space Setup

Best option: crate beside your bed so puppy can hear and smell you. Comfort items: soft toy or worn clothing, ticking clock wrapped in a towel to mimic the mother heartbeat, warm water bottle in fabric.

First Night Routine

Last meal 2-3 hours before bed. Toilet trip 10-15 minutes before sleep. Short calm play session. Into sleeping space with chew toy. Lights low, voice calm.

Responding to Crying

  1. Wait 2-3 minutes.
  2. Go calmly with no excitement.
  3. Brief quiet reassurance.
  4. Leave again.

This teaches: you are not abandoned but nighttime is quiet time.

Night Toilet Trips

Under 12 weeks every 3-4 hours. Carry them quietly, give 2 minutes, then back to bed with no play.

Managing Expectations

Nights 1-3 are hardest. By night 5-7 most puppies adjust. By week 3 most sleep through with one or two interruptions.
