Dog Care at the Beach: Complete Guide
Salt Water Dangers
- Drinking sea water: Can cause vomiting, dehydration, salt poisoning
- Solution: Always bring fresh water, prevent excessive drinking
- Rinse dog after swimming (salt dries/irritates skin)
Hot Sand Warning
- Sand reaches 60-70C in Turkish summer
- 5-second test: Press back of hand to sand. Too hot for you = too hot for paws
- Walk before 9am or after 8pm
- Dog boots (some dogs accept them)
Sun Protection
- Short-haired, light-colored breeds: Sunscreen needed
- Pink nose/ear areas most vulnerable
- Dog-specific sunscreen only (zinc oxide in human = toxic)
After Beach Checklist
- Rinse with fresh water
- Check paws (cuts from shells)
- Check ears (water + sand = infection)
- Fresh water available
